Controversies Surrounding Juneteenth Events at Minneapolis Art Institutions
We discuss the controversies surrounding the Minneapolis Institute of Art's and the Walker Arts Center's Juneteenth events. The MIA's event featured a photo of all white people, while the Walker's event was initially described as celebrating the 'BIPOC community' despite Juneteenth being a specifically Black holiday. There was also controversy over the Walker's previous display of a sculpture by white artist Sam Durant that referenced the hanging of Dakota men, which was eventually removed after protests from the indigenous community.
Happy Juneteenth!
