The Responsibility of Platforms: When Funny Content Meets Serious Reality
We discuss the tension faced by content creators when their platform’s purpose shifts due to real-world events. Using Minnesota Memes as an example, we explore the question: when serious issues like ICE operations and public executions occur in your community, should a humor-focused account address them? We acknowledge that no platform is obligated to cover anything, but we examine the cost of silence—the broken trust with audiences who expect authenticity about their community. We talk about how avoiding difficult conversations, whether on social media or at the dinner table, creates a false reality that contradicts what’s actually happening. Ultimately, we suggest that if creators want to genuinely reflect their community’s reality, they may need to address the elephant in the room or find spaces where others are willing to do so.
