The Discomfort of Reminders: How Black Presence Threatens White Spaces

We discuss how the mere presence of Black people in white spaces is perceived as threatening, not because of imagined danger, but because Black people serve as living reminders of America’s foundation built on slavery and genocide. We examine historical examples like integration of public swimming pools, where white communities abandoned these spaces entirely rather than share them with Black people. We analyze how attempts to remove signs demanding basic humanity—like Al Green’s I am not an ape poster—reveal the deep discomfort some feel when confronted with these reminders. We explore how this discomfort has led to the elimination of these reminders through various means, from removing memorials to suppressing videos of public executions. We conclude by examining what going back really means in this context.
